About me
James Sharif is a British-Caribbean composer and pianist currently based in Birmingham, UK, specialising in contemporary classical music for orchestral, chamber, and small ensembles. He is currently studying music composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire under the mentorship of Andrew Toovey, Trish Clowes, and Joe Cutler.
Lyrical melodies are the foundation of his work, as he tends to treat their progression and development as characters growing throughout the piece. This approach often evokes strong feelings from listeners. He also has a strong interest in multidisciplinary work, particularly exploring the relationship between music and photography to create immersive artistic experiences.
Some of the ensembles and organisations James has collaborated with include the BBC Concert Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, CBSO Remix, The Midland Sinfonia, RBC Brass Band, and The Fidelio Trio. Conductors he’s worked with include Ian Porthouse, Jack Lovell-Huckle, Mark Goodchild, and Tommaso Nista.
